French authorities warn of Viagra-laced honey flooding the black market

French authorities are warning about the growing prevalence of “erectile honey,” a dangerous black-market product containing a mix of honey and erectile dysfunction medications like sildenafil or tadalafil. This illicit product, often marketed in small sticks or vials, has flooded the country and poses significant health risks, especially when consumed with alcohol or other medications. The French customs agency described the product as deceptively appealing, sold under the guise of being natural and harmless.

Often marketed for recreational or “festive” use, the honey can cause serious health issues, particularly for individuals on blood pressure medication or those with cardiovascular conditions. Authorities have stressed the risk of consumers unknowingly jeopardizing their health with a substance they might assume is benign. In 2024, authorities reported a record seizure of approximately 13 tonnes of erectile honey, equating to around 860,000 individual sticks.

This significant haul, discovered in Marseille, involved honey imported from Malaysia under fraudulent documents claiming it to be “natural honey.” Laboratory tests revealed the presence of erectile dysfunction drugs, prompting further scrutiny of imports with similar claims. The popularity of erectile honey has surged in recent years. French customs reported 131 seizures in 2023, compared to just 18 cases in 2019.

The product has been discovered in various regions, including Lyon and Clermont-Ferrand, where nearly 25,000 sticks were confiscated in mid-2024. Officials suggest that Malaysia, TurkeyTunisia, and Thailand are among the primary sources of the contraband. Health experts warn that products containing sildenafil or tadalafil are strictly regulated for a reason. When improperly used, particularly in unverified dosages or combined with substances like alcohol, they can lead to severe side effects, including dangerously low blood pressure.

The unauthorized sale and consumption of such products not only undermine public health but also violate pharmaceutical regulations. The French customs agency continues its efforts to identify and seize shipments of erectile honey, urging consumers to avoid black-market products that claim unverified health benefits. The agency has called for greater public awareness of the risks associated with such items and intensified monitoring of high-risk imports. Consumers are advised to remain vigilant and report suspicious products to authorities to help mitigate the spread of this potentially harmful substance. – By EuroWire News Desk.
